Hello, everyone!I'm Lee Hyeong-gyu, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Foundation.
I would like to thank all of you for visiting our homepage.
Donghak [Eastern Learning] Peasant Revolution in 1894 in Korea was an anti-feudalistic democratic uprising that pursued the equality of all people through the reform of the old feudal system as well as an anti-Japanese national protest that sought to defend national sovereignty against Japanese invasion. But unfortunately, Donghak Peasant Revolution ended in an unfinished revolution as it failed in the Battle of Ugeumti of Gongju due to the inferiority in weapons.
As by the providence of the universe, where the fruit grows on the wounded spots of fallen flowers, the noble patriotic spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution permeated into mountains and rivers during the winter of 1894 and led to March First Independence Movement (1919), April 19 Revolution (1960) and the pro-democracy movement of the 1980s, thus opening democratic society where people can live as decent human beings.
The Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Foundation started as a special corporation of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in February 2010, thereby succeeding the tasks of National Commission on the Donhak Peasant Revolution (Chairman: Prime Minister, 2004~2009) and the Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Foundation (2004~2009) according to the Special Act on the Restoration of Honor of Participants of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, which was enacted in 2004. Since then, the Memorial Foundation has actively promoted the enactment of its memorial day, a survey of its participants and registration of bereaved families, the creation of a memorial park and the registration of related records to UNESCO's Memory of the World to achieve the purpose of the legislation and establish its place in this important record. Moreover, the foundation actively supported the production of TV drama 'Nokdu Flower' and the 'construction of the statue of Jeon Bong-jun, Nokdu General' at the place of his death in Seorin-dong, Jongno, Seoul, to spread nationwide the spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution.
In the future, we will do our best to actively promote the spread of the spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution nationally and to sublimate the project for the development of the universal ideology of humanism, “People are Heaven.” We need a lot of your help to make these projects a success. We sincerely ask for your warm interest and unwavering support.
